Motif vs free agent design skills
Motif and the free design skills people add to a coding agent are aimed at the same complaint: the agent ships working UI that looks generic. Anthropic's frontend-design skill and the open-source UI UX Pro Max skill are free local instructions. Motif is a hosted library the agent calls over MCP, with guidance, checks, and project profiles. Free for 30 days with no card, then Creator is $9 a month. This page does not score them.

Where the facts come from
The two skill columns below come from ASV Labs launch research compiled on 27 September 2026. They are not a Motif benchmark, and they are not a re-test of those repos. If either skill has changed since that note, the skill's own repo wins.
The Motif column was checked against the live site and the catalog stats endpoint on 5 October 2026.
The comparison
| Compared on | Motif | frontend-design skill | UI UX Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A maintained design library. Standard remote MCP server. | A free skill (a prompt file or plugin) from Anthropic. The research describes it as forcing an aesthetic direction and banning a few default looks, including Inter, Roboto, and purple-on-white gradients. | A free open-source local skill. The research describes searchable local tables of styles, palettes, font pairings, 99 UX guidelines, and 161 reasoning rules. |
| Where it runs | https://mcp.asv-labs.com/mcp. You sign in, and you can revoke the connection. | In the agent where you install the skill. No Motif account. | On your machine. The research names uipro init for a chosen client. |
| Price | Free for 30 days from sign-up, no card. Creator $9 a month (US dollars, plus tax where you live). No overage charges. | Free, as recorded 27 September 2026. | Free, MIT licence, as recorded 27 September 2026. |
| Guidance | 738 guides. Each has sources and a verification checklist. 15 are readable in full on the site. | The research calls it a static prompt. No guide library in that description. | Local files the agent can query. Not described as a hosted, per-guide corpus with a review label. |
| Checks | Design-rule checks your agent runs before it ships: contrast, targets, measure, motion, speed. Missing measurements come back unknown, never as a pass. | No check tool in the research description. | No rule-check tool in the research description. |
| Project decisions | Project profiles. Every session starts from your brief and the decisions you approved. An agent cannot approve a decision itself. | No project state in the research description. | No project state in the research description. |
| Templates | 14 launch families: 2 free, 12 premium, marked In production on the templates page. The licence to what was delivered doesn't end with the subscription. | Not part of that skill. | Not part of that skill, in the research description. |
| Review label | Editorial review in progress. 110 of 738 guides reviewed on 5 October 2026. Reviewed means an AI review agent under the owner's authority approved that version, not a person. | Not a versioned guide corpus. | Not described as having a per-guide reviewed or not-yet-reviewed label. |
| Tested clients | Connect page: Claude Code partly verified. Other listed clients not yet verified end to end. Terms: no promise it works with every agent. | Whichever agent can load the skill. Not tested by Motif for this page. | Whichever client its installer supports. Not tested by Motif for this page. |
Sources for the skill columns: Anthropic's write-up at claude.com/blog/improving-frontend-design-through-skills, and github.com/nextlevelbuilder/ui-ux-pro-max-skill, as summarized in the 27 September 2026 research note. Star counts are left out on purpose. They move, and this page is not a ranking.
Why someone pays $9, and why someone shouldn't
Free runs 30 days from sign-up, with no card, so you can compare Motif with a skill you already have. Open a guide on the site. Connect the server. Call get_usage. That call does not use content allowance.
Pay for Creator when you want the premium guides and the premium template families inside the published allowances. Do not pay for Creator if a single prompt file already gives you the direction you wanted. Motif is also the wrong tool if you wanted a component installer. That is a catalog, and this page is not about catalogs.
Model tokens are still billed by the agent's own provider. Motif does not include them.
Limits
Motif's guides are original ASV Labs writing, and editorial review is in progress. Guides not yet reviewed may contain errors. Check their numbers against current official docs before you rely on them.
We can't guarantee that anything built with Motif will look good, meet a standard (such as accessibility or legal compliance), or work with every agent. A free skill does not guarantee that either. Check what you ship.
Claude Code is the only client the connect page marks partly verified, and a full end-to-end workflow check is still in progress. Saying "it works in Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT" without that sentence goes further than the site does.
No Motif customer is cited here. The home page demo, Ferrow, is a fictional photography studio.
