What is an MCP design library?
An MCP design library is a design library a coding agent calls as a remote tool, over MCP, while it writes the product. The agent still writes the code. The library answers with guidance, design-rule checks, and saved project decisions, instead of leaving those choices to whatever the model usually produces. Motif, from ASV Labs, is one example. A static prompt file is not one, and neither is a folder of UI components.

What MCP means here
MCP, in this use, is the protocol the agent already uses when it calls tools on a server you add. Motif is a standard remote MCP server. Its name is motif, its URL is https://mcp.asv-labs.com/mcp, and its transport is Streamable HTTP. You sign in when the client asks.
The connect page lists the clients it documents and how far each has been tested. The terms say Motif can't guarantee it will work with every agent.
What the agent can ask for
On Motif the call is concrete. The agent searches 738 guides by product type and platform, opens the best few (what to build, real values, code, pre-ship checks), and reads your project's brief and approved decisions. Nine tools are live, including search, opening a guide, design-rule checks, project profiles, template download, and get_usage. The tool reference lists all nine.
Design-rule checks cover contrast, targets, measure, motion, and speed. The agent passes in measurements it took. If a measurement is missing, the check reports unknown. It does not report a pass.
Guides cover websites, apps, and PWAs, in seven disciplines on the guides page: Websites, Apps, PWA, Web apps, Systems & data, Motion, and Lessons. Editorial review is in progress. Every guide tells your agent whether its current version has been reviewed. The label means an AI review agent under the owner's authority approved that version. It does not mean a person read the guide.
Three kinds of help, side by side
| Kind of help | What the agent holds | What it does not hold | Motif's place |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt file or local skill | Instructions in the repo or the client's skill folder. Often free. | No remote library, no per-guide source list kept on a server, no shared project profile across sessions. | Not this category. The compare page covers two skills people use. |
| Component catalog over MCP | Parts the agent can search and install. | Design decisions for a specific brief. A button is not a page's job. | Not this category. ASV Labs launch research (27 September 2026) groups shadcn's MCP and 21st.dev's MCP here. |
| MCP design library | Guidance the agent queries, checks it can run, and project decisions you approved. | A guarantee about the finished UI. The model still writes the code, and you still check what ships. | Motif is this. 738 guides with sources and a verification checklist. 110 reviewed. |
What it costs to try Motif
Free is $0 for 30 days from sign-up, with no card. Creator is $9 a month. There are no overage charges. Your agent's own model bill is separate. Every allowance is on the limits page before you buy.
The licence to templates already delivered doesn't end with the subscription. Use them in unlimited end products, for yourself or for clients, including commercial products.
Limits
This page defines a category Motif fits. It does not say Motif is the only product that could fit it, and it does not rank others.
The checks are deterministic rules over facts the agent measured. The guides include targets and a verification checklist. The terms still say we can't guarantee the result will look good, meet a standard (such as accessibility or legal compliance), or work with every agent. Check what you ship.
On 5 October 2026 the catalog stats endpoint reported 110 of 738 guides reviewed. The rest are not yet reviewed and may contain errors. Separately, 15 guides are printed in full on the website, so you can read the writing before you connect anything.
Next step
Read the library, or connect the server and ask for get_usage. That call shows the plan and the allowances and does not spend them.
